School and Instructors

Message from the Dance Faculty

Join us for our 2021-2022 dance season – our 60th! It promises to be an exciting season. Please join us in the celebrating our culture and proud heritage.

I am delighted to be a part of the Yavir School of Ukrainian Dance. I see how the dedication and pride in the school shines through in each dancer, instructor and volunteer. I look forward to continuing to dance with the spirited dancers, talented instructors, hard-working Executive Committee, and dedicated parents in continuing the long Yavir heritage of excellence in Ukrainian dance.

This year will be an exciting one as we continue to build our repertoire and perform in concerts throughout the season. Together I know we will make it a wonderful success. I am eager to enthusiastically teach and share my passion for the beautiful art form of Ukrainian dance with the dancers. I am certain the future will unveil new choreographic compositions, thrilling performances and continued successes. Together we’ll continue to make Yavir’s long legacy proud!

Artistic Director Krista Samborsky

Krista Samborsky is an accomplished dancer, teacher and former Yavir artistic director. After an absence of four years, Krista has returned to Yavir excited to share her vast amount of experience both nationally and internationally; having danced and studied in Canada, the United States and Ukraine. Krista has danced and performed with Yavir, the Kozaks (Toronto), Virsky, Veryovka, Yunist, Horiy Svit (Ukraine) and Ukraina (Chicago).

Krista brings a wealth of experience not just in dance (Ballet, jazz, modern and world dance), but she is also a specialist in choreography and performance. Being able to study and dance with some of Toronto’s leading modern dance choreographers, Krista brings a unique flare to the Toronto Ukrainian dance community.

Having started dance with Yavir at the age of four, Krista knows first hand the joy and rewards that come from being part of Toronto’s oldest and most successful Ukrainian dance company.

She has an exceptional educational background as well. After completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (with an accompanying degree in psychology) from York University, Krista went on to complete a Master’s degree in dance/movement therapy and counselling from Columbia College Chicago. She has advanced certificates in Movement Pattern Analysis, counselling and psychotherapy.

Krista is passionate about Ukrainian dance and the Yavir community. She envisions seeing Yavir becoming, not just one of the best; but the best Ukrainian Dance company in Toronto.
